Although more smartphone providers than ever are competing for the love and affection (and off course the money lying in their pockets) of potential smartphone customers all around the globe, the furious platform supremacy war seems to be concluded. As per a new forecast published by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the position of Android and iOS on top is cemented as other platforms fail to make a substantial breakthrough. Out of the two, Android is way ahead of iOS.
With well above 80% market share, Android devices are faring good and looking all set to dominate worldwide smartphone market until 2019 and beyond. Only Apple’s iOS platform looks strong enough to hold its own against Android’s popularity.
All other platforms, especially Windows Phone, are trailing way behind and reaping the curse of playing the third fiddle behind Android and iOS. Because of this, more and more app developers abandon their platforms, which results in their weakened appeal to prospective smartphone buyers.
The following chart shows a forecast of smartphone operating system market share in 2015 and 2019.
